WATER The water in the mix acts as a carrier. The seeds immediate contact with the water accelerates the growth process by initiating germination.
SEED
Nearly any seed or mixture of seeds can be used. You can tailor the mix to take into account factors such as amount of sun or shade, the terrain, the type of soil, maintenance and durability (pets, children).
Germination time will depend on many factors such as the weather, the time of year, the amount of water, etc. However, grass will usually be visible in 5-7 days.
Mixtures can be used to seed for special purposes such as athletic fields, golf courses, pastures, erosion control and blends of wildflower seeds can brighten any roadside.
FERTILIZER
A "starter" fertilizer, high in phosphorus, is used that will stimulate root growth.
MULCH
The best mulch is made from a mixture of paper and wood. Once sprayed on the soil, it forms a consistent and crusty coating that protects the seed and soil by holding the seed in place, seals in moisture, and also impedes the growth of weeds. Hydro seeding mulch is what gives it the green color. If any accidentally gets on your walkways, driveways or house, it will not stain and can be washed off, or will just disappear on its own. It is 100% biodegradable and “environmentally friendly”, and even fertilizes the soil.
OTHER ADDITIVES
Other products that may be added to a hydro seeding mix:
- EROSION CONTROL PRODUCTS such as tackifier help hold the material on a hillside even in rainy conditions. Seed is held in place long enough for the roots to grow.
- A lime-based product is used if the soil’s pH level needs correcting.
- Products such as CO-POLYMERS hold 400 times their weight in water and slowly release it as needed. This is recommended if it is unlikely that the area will be watered regularly.
- Growth stimulants.
